SBX-75 and SBX-75A Ionization Unit In Field Test

QUICK IONIZATION UNIT FIELD TEST

  1. Disconnect and remove all power to the unit.
  2. Put the test/operate jumper in the “test” position (lower two horizontal pins)on the main circuit board.
  3. Check the fuse with a multimeter for continuity.
  4. Reconnect and turn power to the unit on.
  5. Turn the power switch on.
  6. The “Power Monitor” light will alternate between green and orange every 9-10 seconds. On older units the red “Power Monitor” light will alternate between on and off.
  7. Disconnect the wires from the electrodes and short them together.
  8. Rotate the ION OUTPUT knob to 30%.
  9. The ION OUTPUT light should illuminate. Short the leads for less than 15 seconds!
  10. Remove the short between the electrode wires - the CHECK ELECTRODES light should illuminate.
  11. Turn the power off.
  12. Reconnect the wires to the electrodes. Rotate the ION OUTPUT knob to 0%.

IONIZATION OUTPUT TEST WITH MULTIMETER

It is mandatory to follow the multimeter manufacturer's directions and safety instructions.

Note: For ease of testing, we suggest the multimeter should be a digital auto-ranging device with auto polarity.

  1. Turn all power to the unit off.
  2. Turn Ion Output knob to the "0" or "OFF" position.
  3. Disconnect one lead from unit to the electrodes, at the electrodes. Connect the meter as shown in below:

  4. Set switches on meter to measure 10 or 20 amps DC current
  5. Verify leads to the meter are hooked up properly, the 10 or 20 amp scale usually requires the leads to be in special positions on the meter.
  6. Turn on power to the unit. Rotate the timer until the pump turns on.
  7. Meter should read less than 0.02 Amps . (20 ma)
  8. Turn Ion Output knob to "30".
  9. Meter should read between 0.1 and 0.2 amps. (100 and 200 ma)
  10. Turn Ion Output knob to "100" (full cw).
  11. Meter should read between 0.40 and 0.60 amps (400 and 600 ma). Note: on old units the reading may be up to 0.80 . (800 ma)
  12. Wait about 3 1/2 minutes and polarity should change. (+ and -)
  13. If the unit is in the “test” mode; the polarity will change more rapidly.
  14. Turn power off to the unit. Turn power off on meter. Disconnect test leads.
  15. Return electrode lead to the Ionization Chamber.
  16. Return ionization output knob to "0" or previous setting.

If the unit does not pass these tests, note the step and failure. Contact the factory for further insturctions.

This completes the Field Test Instructions for the SBX-75 and SBX-75A units.
