Pool Motor Management FAQ's

Warning

Observe all equipment and test equipment operating instructions, warnings and caution notes. Do not repair or replace any part of the system or attempt any servicing unless specifically recommended in published user-repair instructions that you understand and have the skill to carry out.

Please refer to the Owner's Manual for your unit for details on how your individual model operates. The information provided is general in nature unless otherwise noted.

My system has no lights and nothing happens.   My unit used to go to low speed now it does not.
How do I set the time clock?

No Indicators Are Illuminated and Nothing Operates.

  1. Check the circuit breaker panel and make sure power is applied to the system.

  2. Turn power at the circuit breaker panel off to all the pool equipment and check the fuses in the system. The size of the fuse (1/2A (1/2 amp), 2SB (2amp slow blow) is noted on the circuit board printed in white lettering next to the fuse.

Do not trust a visual check of the fuse, check it with a continuity tester or have an electronic parts retailer verify the fuse is good.

  3. If so equipped, make sure the Pump On/Pump Off or Maintenance/Normal switch is in the Pump On or Normal position.

  4. Contact the factory.

My System Doesn't Go To Low Speed Now.

Most pump motor controllers include a part that determines if water is flowing (water pressure is not the same as water flow!). Almost all system functions depend on this part to indicate that water is flowing. This is to prevent motors and pumps from burning up and to reduce the chance of damage to other equipment.

1. Make sure the filter is clean and properly assembled.

2. Make sure the pump hair and lint pot is clean.

3. Make sure all divertor valves are properly set.

4. Verify the system is in the "Automatic" mode.

5. Make sure the "Freeze" protect circuitry is not activated. Make sure the "Freeze" indicator on the front panel is not illuminated.

6. Make sure you have the time clock set for a continuous "On" period of at least 3 1/2 hours (based on standard factory settings). The time for high to low speed switching varies depending on the switch setting on a circuit board. Turn off all power to the pool equipment before opening the unit and setting the high to low speed switching period.

7. Verify the "No Flow" light never illuminates. This indicates the flow sensor pressure switch is closed during pump operation.

8. Make sure the flow sensor orifice (small hole at the end) is not clogged with DE or debris.

9. A quick check can be made to determine if the problem is water flow or flow sensor related.

Short or connect the two wire leads tightly together that connect to the flow sensor. If the unit runs normally, with these wires connected together, then there is a flow or flow sensor problem. See the field test page for your model for more information on testing.

10. Monitor the system and when it attempts to switch to low speed does the pump:

Never attempt to switch to low speed. Check the flow sensor operation.

Turn off - then return to high speed operation. Check low speed motor winding.

Run in low speed for a short period of time - then return to high speed operation. There is not enough water flow in low speed operation. Check items 1,2,3 above and flow sensor calibration.

Run in low speed for a long period of time (20 minutes or more) - then return to high speed operation. You are probably losing pump prime over a long period of time or you may have a plumbing air leak.

11. Contact the factory.

How To Set The Time Clock

Turn the power off to all the pool equipment. If it is desired to filter the pool between 8am and 8pm push all the detentes toward the center of the dial between 8am and 8pm. Pull all the other detentes away from the center of the dial. The times are printed on the dial. Rotate the time clock at least 1/4 a turn. Rotate the outer dial until the hands of the clock in the center match the time on a normal clock. The white arrow on the edge of the outer dial will match the time of the "hands of the clock". Turn power to the pool equipment back on.
