BEFORE TURNING ON THE PURIFIER

IMPORTANT!
DO NOT TURN ON THE PURIFIER UNTIL THE SPA WATER IS BALANCED.

If you're installing the system on an existing spa, drain and refill the spa. Run the spa for two weeks while maintaing a 2.0ppm concentration of cholrine. The drain and refill the spa.

If the spa is new then fill the spa. Run the spa for two weeks while maintaing a 2.0ppm concentration of cholrine. The drain and refill the spa.

Balance the water as follows:

pH 7.6 to 7.8 parts per million (ppm) or milligrams per liter
Total Alkalinity 80 to 100 PPM
Calcium Hardness 150 to 300ppm
Total Hardness
(For Reference)
Higher than or equal to Calcium Hardness. But less than Calcium Hardness + 150ppm
Total Dissolved Solids
(T.D.S.)
Less than 2300 PPM If this is too high the spa should be partially or fully drained and the water replaced.
Copper Less than .2 PPM

Run the spa using chlorine or bromine as a sanitizer and use a non-chlorine shock for a period of seven to fourteen days..On new spas a period of at least fourteen days is recommended before the purifier is turned on. At the end of this period clean the filter, copper and silver electrodes and change the water.

Prior to obtaining the desired water balance required for proper purification, it is necessary that water purification take place. Add 2 oz. of liquid chlorine every other day. If the spa temperature is high you may have to add the chlorine every day.

TURNING ON THE PURIFIER

Turn off the power to the spa and ionization unit, connect the electrode wires. Turn on the power switch for the purifier. Set the purifier output to 50%. After two days of normal operation check the copper level with the provided test kit and every two days thereafter. Add 1 oz. of liquid chlorine or bromine every other day. The filtration pump should run at least 4 hours per day.

If the copper level is below the desired level continue operating the system at 50%.

When the copper level is at or above the desired level reduce the output to 30%.If the copper level is at or above the desired level, stop adding the liquid chlorine or bromine.

RECOMMENDED LEVELS OF COPPER

The copper level should be .5 to .6ppm depending on water temperature and usage. During periods of time when the spa is not used, the level should average about .3ppm.

NOTES ON COPPER TESTING

  1. The Palintest copper test kit is affected by any chlorine in the water. It is also affected by relative high levels of zinc in the fill water. Be sure and follow the directions in the owners manual.
  2. As noted in the owners manual, for the Palintest test kit, at a copper level of .4 to .5ppm the water in the test chamber may appear clear or gray. The indication for no copper would be a dark orange.
  3. The water must be balanced to get an accurate reading.

MAINTAINING PURIFIER OPERATION

The ion output control numbers on the unit are only a rule of thumb. For proper operation and best results, test your copper level once a week under normal operating conditions.

Adjust the knob by no more that 10 (i.e.. 60 to 70, 50 to 40 and so on) to maintain the desired copper level. If copper level is too high, reduce the setting. If the copper level is too low, increase the setting of the ionization output control. Changes in copper level occur gradually. A period of five days may lapse before changes occur.

Perform normal maintenance weekly by measuring the copper level and balancing your water (alkalinity, pH) to the required levels. The water hardness and TDS (total dissolved solids) should be checked when the water is changed. Electrodes should be cleaned when the water is changed or every three to four months.

Most supply water for your spa is not balanced for spa use. Thus, when adding water due to evaporation, the water balance is affected. Normal use of the spa will result in changes in water balance. Maintaining the total alkalinity and pH is very important.

One of the keys to proper operation of any pool is maintaining the proper water balance. The importance of total alkalinity can not be stressed enough.

OXIDATION

Because the purifier uses a non-oxidizing process we suggest that you maintain a .4ppm halogen residual. Or we recommend a non-chlorine oxidizer to shock or burn up organic material that may enter the spa as a result of bather load, rain or other natural occurrences.

Use a product containing at least 42% but not more that 46% potassium monopersulfate. A sodium percarbonate product may also be used.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the container.

Recommended products are:

Note: When adding chemicals follow all manufacturer's instructions and dosages. Your spa is a small body of water and dosages are usually very small.

Remember - More is not better!
